Smart holiday buys: The basics you’ll wear all summer long

Smart holiday buys: The basics you’ll wear all summer long

Summer might still seem ages away but holiday essentials tend to sell out quickly — so it's better to think ahead. From comfortable sandals to swimwear, sunglasses and other must-haves, here are the items to make sure you pick up before you jet off.

Sandals

First things first, footwear. A good pair of shoes is vital on holidays when you’re likely to do more walking than usual. If you’re stuck for suitcase space, classic black is safest as it will go with everything… but be sure to break new shoes in well in advance. Blisters in the heat are no one’s idea of fun!

Shorts

Next up on the summer holiday packing list are shorts. Linen, denim, silk, Bermuda – these days, there’s a style to suit just about everyone. A patterned pair will make a statement, but if you’re going away for longer than just a few days, neutrals are more practical (they’re versatile enough to be worn several times). Last year, jorts—that’s jean shorts, to you—were everywhere; I’ve yet to embrace the trend but for the more fashion forward, perhaps a longer hemmed pair of denim cut-offs are all you need?

A nice top

Once you have your shorts sorted, then it’s time to think about what tops you want to bring. Bandeau tops are a great investment in your wardrobe as they’re light and can be worn with shorts, skirts, jeans and linen pants. When dressing for hot weather, avoid anything with too much material lest you want to be permanently drenched in sweat. Button-ups are a great choice as they can be worn as is or paired with another top underneath for two looks in one.

A holiday dress

A holiday dress can take you from day to night with just a change of shoes and some new accessories, meaning you’ll get multiple wears out of it. Anything brightly coloured or linen gets a big yes from me!

Swimwear

Swimsuit shopping is rarely a fun activity, but find one you absolutely love and you’ll feel like you can take on the world. From one-pieces to tankinis to long-sleeved wetsuit-esque swimwear, there are an abundance of different styles out there and it’s worth taking a bit of time to ensure you find one that makes you feel your best.

Sunglasses

Finally, a pair of decent sunglasses. Sunglasses are functional and aesthetic; they protect your eyes from that fiery orb of light in the sky and they can really dress up an outfit too. A holiday necessity.
